Easter Island Moai
These monumental structures or moai are found on Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui or Isla de Pascua. The structures are monolithic human figures. There are 887 moai in Rapa Nui, the tallest is about 10 meters and heaviest about 270 tons.
Rapa Nui (Easter Island) is the southeastern-most island in Polynesia. The moai were created by the Rapanui people from 1100-1680 CE, almost all them from solidified volcanic ash. Rapa Nui is now part of Chile, which is 3,500 km to the east. Its nearest inhabited neighbor is Pitcairn Island, 2,000 km to the west.
